Learn to Skate

Learning to skate can be very exciting, but it can also be very challenging for some individuals. Coach Jill knows all of the basic moves you need to learn in order to progress as an ice skater. With over 20 years experience, Coach Jill works with children and adults in private lessons when first learning how to skate. Below are some skills Coach Jill will teach you if you are a beginner:

Basic Skills

Basic skills are the fundamentals of ice skating which provides the best starting point for figure skating, hockey, and speed skating. Once a skater has mastered the basic skills, skaters will become more advanced in their skating skills.

Basic One

  1. March forward on ice and stand up
  2. Forward two-foot glide
  3. Forward swizzles
  4. Backward wiggles
  5. Beginning snowplow stop on two feet or one foot
  6. Two foot hop in one place

With Coach Jill’s help, not only will you learn these skills, you’ll have fun in the process. With Each basic skill level you pass comes more confidence, which will come in handy outside of the ice rink at school, work, and at home.

 

Basic Two

  1. Scooter pushes — R and L
  2. Forward one-foot glides — R and L
  3. Backward two-foot glide — Glide the length of skater’s height
  4. Rocking horse (one forward swizzle,one backward swizzle)
  5. Backward swizzles
  6. Two-foot turns from forward to backward in place
  7. Moving snowplow stop
  8. Curves

 

Basic Three

  1. Beginning forward stroking showing correct use of blade
  2. Forward half swizzle pumps on a circle — 6–8 consecutive clockwise and counterclockwise
  3. Moving forward to backward two foot turns on a circle — clockwise and
    counterclockwise
  4. Beginning backward one-foot glides —focus on balance
  5. Backward snowplow stop — R and L
  6. Forward slalom
  7. Forward pivots – clockwise and counter clockwise

 

Basic Four

  1. Forward outside edge on a circle — R and L
  2. Forward inside edge on a circle — R and L
  3. Forward crossovers — clockwise and counterclockwise
  4. Backward half swizzle pumps on a circle — clockwise and
    counterclockwise
  5. Backward one-foot glides — R and L
  6. Beginning two-foot spin — Up to two revolutions
  7. Forward lunges — both legs

 

Basic Five

  1. Backward outside edge on a circle — R and L
  2. Backward inside edge on a circle — R and L
  3. Backward crossovers — clockwise and counterclockwise
  4. Forward outside three-turn — R and L
  5. Advanced two-foot spin — 4–6 rotations
  6. Hockey stop — both directions
  7. Side toe hop — R and L

 

Basic Six

  1. Forward inside three-turn — R and L
  2. Moving backward to forward two foot turn on a circle — clockwise and
    counterclockwise
  3. Backward stroking
  4. Beginning one-foot spin –  2–4 revolutions, optional free leg position and entry
  5. T-stops – R and L
  6. Bunny hop
  7. Forward spiral on a straight line – R or L
  8. Shoot the duck – R or L

With support and training from coach Jill, all of these skills will be mastered in order to become an excellent ice skater.
